"etymology_text": "PIE word\n *wĺ̥kʷos\nInherited from Middle Norwegian Botolfr, from Old Norse Bótólfr, a variant of Bótulfr. The Old Norse name is a compound of bót (“remedy, help, improvement”) + úlfr (“wolf”), literally “remedy-wolf”.\nThe first element, bót (“remedy, help, improvement”), is from Proto-Germanic *bōtō (“improvement, betterment; recompense, atonement”), ultimately from the Proto-Indo-European root *bʰed- (“to improve, make better”). The second element, úlfr (“wolf”), is from Proto-Germanic *wulfaz (“wolf”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *wĺ̥kʷos (“wolf”).\nDuring the 14th century, the original long vowel in Bótólfr was shortened in forms such as Botolfr. This development, unusual compared with corresponding common nouns, has been attributed to the name losing its transparent semantic association with bot (“remedy, redress”). The modern spelling Botolv came into renewed use from the mid-19th century as medieval Nordic names were revived.\nThe name has also long been associated in Scandinavia with the cult of the Anglo-Saxon abbot and saint Botolph of Thorney, whose feast day on 17 June became known in Norway as botolvsmesse.\nCompare Faroese Bótolvur, Icelandic Bótólfur, Swedish Botolf and English Botolph (“male given name”).",
